PT40 Limited Warranty and Extended Coverage

Your Coverage at a Glance

Your PT40 is covered against defects for as long as your Annual Compliance Plan covers it, up to 3 years. If it fails because of a defect, CARBtrax will replace it one time at no charge. The replacement comes set up for your truck and ready to plug in.

What Is Covered

CARBtrax, LLC warrants that your PT40 is designed and built free from defects in materials and workmanship. This covers the PT40 device sold for California’s Clean Truck Check program.

What we cover:

  • The PT40 device itself

  • The OBD cable and any Y-cable that came with your order (1 year only)

  • Firmware problems that stop the PT40 from collecting or sending test data

When coverage starts: The day your PT40 is delivered.

When coverage ends: At the later of these two dates:

  • 1 year after delivery, or

  • The last day of your paid Annual Compliance Plan term, up to 3 years total. Coverage never runs past 3 years, even if you keep renewing your plan.

Your plan must stay paid. Extended Coverage in years 2 and 3 only applies while your Annual Compliance Plan is active. If your plan lapses, Extended Coverage ends that day. Renewing later does not bring back coverage for problems that started while the plan was lapsed.

The factory warranty. Pacific Track, LLC makes the PT40 and provides the first-year factory warranty. CARBtrax handles all first-year claims for you under those terms. In years 2 and 3, CARBtrax covers the device directly.

What Is Not Covered

This warranty covers defects. It does not cover damage or problems caused by something else. We will not cover a PT40 that was:

  • Physically damaged: dropped, crushed, cracked, kicked, or hit by tools or cargo

  • Exposed to water or fluids: washed down, submerged, or soaked by fuel, oil, coolant or DEF

  • Mounted in the wrong place: in the engine bay, outside the cab, or anywhere it sees direct heat or weather instead of behind the dash as instructed

  • Run outside its rated limits: temperature, voltage or other limits in the manufacturer’s specifications

  • Hit by an electrical event: welding on the truck with the PT40 plugged in, jump-starting with wrong polarity, or wiring faults in the truck

  • Opened or modified: case opened, label or serial number removed, or firmware changed by anyone other than CARBtrax or Pacific Track

  • Moved to another truck without CARBtrax setting it up for the new VIN first

  • Lost or stolen

  • Used with a lapsed plan, for any problem that started while the plan was not paid

We also do not cover:

  • Normal wear, scratches or faded labels

  • Damage from fire, flood, accident, or other events outside our control

  • Cellular dead zones or carrier outages. The PT40 stores tests and sends them once it has signal.

  • Problems with the truck itself, such as a bad OBD port, wiring, or engine computer

  • Conflicts with an ELD or tracker plugged into the same port without the supplied Y-cable

  • A failed Clean Truck Check because of an emissions problem on the truck. The PT40 reports what the truck reports.

  • Towing, downtime, lost income, CARB penalties, missed deadlines or registration holds

CARB Certification Status

The PT40 is certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as a continuously connected remote OBD device (CC-ROBD) under CARB’s Executive Order series for the PT40 (currently IM-006-0001-7, plus later renewals). Please know these facts about that certification:

  • It runs by calendar year. The PT40 is approved for Clean Truck Check from the date on its Executive Order through December 31 of that year.

  • It must be renewed every year. The manufacturer must recertify the PT40 with CARB each year.

  • CARB can pull it at any time. CARB may decertify the device if it finds the device does not meet program rules.

CARBtrax will tell you if the PT40’s certification status changes. Firmware updates needed to keep certification are installed over the air at no charge while your plan is active.

Decertification is not a defect. If CARB decertifies the PT40, changes the rules, or does not renew the Executive Order, that is not a hardware defect under this warranty. CARBtrax does not give refunds or credits because of a change in CARB certification.

How to Make a Claim

Call us first. Many problems are a loose cable or a bad port and can be fixed over the phone.

  1. Contact CARBtrax at 1-800-530-7367 or www.CARBtrax.com/support.

  2. Have this ready: your truck’s VIN, the PT40 serial number (printed on the label), and your order number if you have it.

  3. Troubleshoot with us. We will check the device remotely and walk you through the LED lights and cable.

  4. Get a return number. If the PT40 still does not work, we give you a Return Authorization (RA) number.

  5. Ship the PT40 to us. You pay the shipping, unless the PT40 fails within 30 days of delivery. Then we email you a prepaid label. Write the RA number on the box. Use a tracked service and insure the PT40 and any cables for their full value. CARBtrax is not responsible for uninsured items lost or damaged on the way to us.

  6. We inspect it. If it has a covered defect, we ship you a replacement set up for your truck’s VIN. We pay that shipping.

Keep your paperwork in the truck. While your PT40 is out for warranty work, keep the RA number, your shipping receipt and tracking number, and any emails from CARBtrax in the vehicle. This shows the device is out for warranty work if anyone asks.

You are still responsible for your Clean Truck Check deadlines. CARB’s system flags trucks that stop reporting, no matter what paperwork is in the cab. CARBtrax cannot pause, extend or waive a CARB deadline while your PT40 is in the mail. If your compliance window will close before the replacement arrives, get a test from a CARB-credentialed tester. CARBtrax’s credentialed testers can do this for you.

Need it faster? Ask for an advance replacement. For a refundable deposit equal to our replacement rate, we ship your replacement before your old unit arrives. We refund the deposit once we receive the old unit and confirm a covered defect. If it is not returned within 15 days, or the problem is not covered, we keep the deposit as payment for the replacement.

One replacement limit. CARBtrax will replace a defective PT40 one time during your coverage period, at no charge. The replacement may be new or factory refurbished. It is covered for the rest of your original coverage period, or 90 days from delivery, whichever is longer. A second failure is not replaced under this warranty and is handled at the out-of-warranty price.

If we find no defect, or the damage is not covered, we will contact you before charging anything. You can buy a replacement at the out-of-warranty price, or we will ship your unit back at your cost.

Out-of-warranty price: CARBtrax’s prevailing customer replacement rate at the time you order.

If You Sell the Truck

The warranty goes with the PT40. If you sell the truck with the PT40 installed, the new owner keeps whatever coverage is left. The new owner should call CARBtrax to put the plan and warranty in their name. If the PT40 moves to a different truck, CARBtrax must set it up for the new VIN first.

Legal Terms

  • This is a limited warranty. It is the only warranty CARBtrax gives on the PT40. No employee, dealer or installer can change it or add to it.

  • Your only remedy under this warranty is one replacement of a defective PT40, as described above.

  • LIMITED IMPLIED WARRANTIES. ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, LASTS ONLY AS LONG AS THIS WRITTEN WARRANTY, TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS.

  • LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, CARBTRAX, LLC IS NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES. THIS INCLUDES DOWNTIME, LOST INCOME, TOWING, CLEAN TRUCK CHECK NONCOMPLIANCE FEES, FINES, CITATIONS, AND REGISTRATION HOLDS FROM CARB OR THE DMV. CARBTRAX’S TOTAL LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE PRICE YOU PAID FOR THE PT40.

  • Your state may give you more rights. Some states do not allow limits on implied warranties or on consequential damages, so some of these limits may not apply to you.

  • California law governs this warranty.
